What Is the AWS AI Business Strategist Certification?

The AWS AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01) is a Business-category AWS certification for professionals who decide how organizations invest in AI. It tests AI literacy, strategy and return on investment, governance, and adoption leadership. No coding is required, and the beta exam costs 50 USD.

AWS placed this certification in a brand new category called Business, separate from the Foundational, Associate, Professional, and Specialty levels. That placement tells you what the exam is about. It does not test whether you can configure Amazon Bedrock or tune a model. It tests whether you can judge which AI investments deserve funding, build a business case that survives scrutiny, set governance that manages risk, and lead adoption from a pilot to company-wide use.

AWS states the point plainly on the official certification page: the exam “does not assess AWS services knowledge.” The skills are portable across tools, vendors, and industries. What you need is a strategic-level awareness of what AWS AI services and frameworks offer, without hands-on experience using them.

The timing matters for one more reason. Candidates who earn the certification by February 15, 2027 receive an additional Early Adopter digital badge, a marker that later candidates cannot earn.

Recommended experience 6 months of working with or alongside AI initiatives, plus basic familiarity with AI concepts
Early Adopter badge Pass by February 15, 2027 to earn it

Two format details deserve attention. First, multiple response questions carry no partial credit: you must select every correct option to score the question. Second, unanswered questions count as incorrect and there is no penalty for guessing, so answer everything.

The Four Exam Domains and Their Weights

The official exam guide divides the scored content into four domains. Strategy and business value carries the largest share, and the other three domains are weighted equally.

Domain Weight What it covers
1. AI Fundamentals and Literacy 24% AI, machine learning, and generative AI concepts in business language; solution types such as recommendation engines, natural language processing, computer vision, and document extraction; prompt engineering and model adaptation at a conceptual level; when AI is the wrong tool for a problem
2. AI Strategy and Business Value Creation 28% Selecting and prioritizing use cases; build, buy, or partner decisions; KPIs, baselines, and ROI frameworks; cost structures and cost control; competitive advantage and business model impact
3. AI Governance and Responsible AI Leadership 24% Responsible AI principles and tradeoffs; governance structures and accountability; regulatory compliance; enterprise AI risk, bias, and mitigation; human oversight
4. Business Readiness, Leadership, and AI Transformation 24% AI maturity and readiness across people, process, technology, and governance; data and infrastructure foundations; change management and workforce capability; scaling pilots to enterprise deployments

At a strategic level, the exam guide expects familiarity with Amazon Bedrock (including Guardrails and Knowledge Bases), Amazon SageMaker AI, and Amazon Quick, plus the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework, the shared responsibility model for AI workloads, and the Well-Architected Framework Responsible AI Lens. Cost tools such as the AWS Pricing Calculator, AWS Cost Explorer, Savings Plans, and AWS Marketplace appear because they support ROI and build-buy-partner conversations. You need to know what each one is for and when it fits, not how to operate it.

Just as useful is the official out-of-scope list. Coding models, feature engineering, hyperparameter tuning, pipeline build-out, statistical model analysis, and hands-on security configuration are all explicitly out of scope. If a study resource spends hours on those topics, it is preparing you for a different exam.

Who Should Take the AWS AI Business Strategist Exam?

AWS names the target roles directly: product and program managers, sales and business development professionals, line-of-business leaders, consultants, business analysts, and marketing professionals. The common thread is decision rights. You evaluate, champion, or scale AI initiatives, and you work alongside technical teams without building the solutions yourself.

The business case for this skill set is visible in the adoption data. According to McKinsey and the State of AI 2025 survey, 88 percent of organizations now report regular AI use in at least one business function, up from 78 percent a year earlier. Yet nearly two-thirds of those organizations remain in the experimentation or piloting stage, and only 39 percent report any impact from AI on enterprise-wide earnings. Adoption is everywhere; value capture is rare. The professionals who close that gap are the ones who can pick the right use cases, fund them properly, and scale what works, which is precisely the judgment this exam certifies.

The certification also pairs well with AWS Certified AI Practitioner. The two credentials test different things: AI Practitioner validates foundational knowledge of AI concepts and AWS AI services, while AI Business Strategist validates business judgment. Earning both shows technical literacy and strategic judgment in one profile.

Who Should Skip This Certification

  • Engineers and data scientists. If you build or deploy models, AWS Certified AI Practitioner, Machine Learning Engineer Associate, or Generative AI Developer Professional will serve you better. This exam contains no console work and no code.
  • Candidates who want deep AWS services knowledge. AWS states that this certification does not assess AWS services knowledge. If your goal is to prove you can work in the AWS console, choose a role-based certification instead.
  • Anyone expecting a memorization exam. The questions are scenario-based and ask for the best decision, so flashcard-only revision will leave marks on the table.

AWS AI Business Strategist Study Plan: 4 Weeks

The plan below assumes about five to seven study hours per week. Compress it into two weeks if you already work on AI initiatives daily, and stretch it to six if the vocabulary is new. Track every step with the printable tracker linked further down this page.

Week 1: AI Fundamentals and Literacy (Domain 1)

  • Read the official exam guide end to end and note the exact vocabulary AWS uses.
  • Learn the differences between AI, machine learning, and generative AI, and the business use of each major solution type: recommendation engines, natural language processing, computer vision, document extraction, and customer operations AI.
  • Cover prompt engineering, retrieval augmented generation, and fine-tuning at a conceptual level: what each does, what it costs, and when you would choose one over the other.
  • Write down five situations where AI is the wrong answer. The exam rewards restraint as much as enthusiasm.

Week 2: Strategy and Business Value (Domain 2)

  • This is the heaviest domain at 28 percent, so give it the most time.
  • Practice framing a business case: problem, baseline metric, target KPI, cost estimate, and expected return.
  • Drill build versus buy versus partner decisions, including how AWS Marketplace and managed services change the economics.
  • Learn the cost vocabulary: consumption-based, instance-based, and seat-based pricing, Savings Plans, and how the AWS Pricing Calculator and Cost Explorer support an ROI conversation.

Week 3: Governance and Responsible AI (Domain 3)

  • Learn the dimensions of responsible AI and the tradeoffs between them, such as accuracy versus explainability.
  • Study governance structures: who approves an AI use case, who monitors it in production, and who can pause it.
  • Cover risk classification, bias, harmful content, intellectual property, and hallucinations, plus how Amazon Bedrock Guardrails and the Well-Architected Responsible AI Lens fit at a conceptual level.
  • Review the shared responsibility model for AI workloads: what AWS secures, and what remains the responsibility of your organization.

Week 4: Readiness, Transformation, and Exam Practice (Domain 4)

  • Learn how to assess AI maturity across people, process, technology, and governance, and how to spot capability gaps.
  • Cover adoption stages from pilot to enterprise scale, executive sponsorship, champions, and the role of a center of excellence.
  • Follow the official Exam Prep Plan on AWS Skill Builder and work through the official practice question set to calibrate your timing and question style.
  • Book the exam, then do a final pass over the exam guide task statements, checking each one against a real example from your own work.

How to Register for the AWS AI Business Strategist Exam

  1. Go to the official AWS Certified AI Business Strategist page and choose “Schedule an exam.”
  2. Sign in to your AWS Certification account, or create one. Use the exact name shown on your government ID.
  3. Select the AIB-C01 beta exam and choose your delivery mode: a Pearson VUE test center, or online proctoring from your own computer.
  4. Pick a date and time, then pay the 50 USD beta fee.
  5. Save the confirmation. It states your exact appointment length and the check-in rules for your chosen delivery mode.

One scheduling note: AWS validates question performance during a beta, so results can take longer than standard results. Early candidates reported fast results, but treat a delay as normal rather than as a bad sign.

Is the AWS AI Business Strategist exam hard?

It is demanding in a different way from technical exams. There is no code and no console work, but the questions are scenario-based and ask you to choose the best business decision among several plausible options. Candidates with real experience evaluating AI projects will find the judgment familiar; the study effort goes into learning the AWS vocabulary and frameworks the exam expects.

How much does the AIB-C01 exam cost?
