KASNEB New Syllabus 2027: CPA, CS, CIFA and CCP Changes With AI Explained

KASNEB new syllabus infographic: CPA, CS, CIFA and CCP changes with AI content, first exams in April 2027

Kenya is rewriting the rulebook for its professional accountancy and finance qualifications. The Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (KASNEB) has launched a revised syllabus for four qualifications: Certified Public Accountants (CPA), Certified Secretaries (CS), Certified Investment and Financial Analysts (CIFA) and Certified Credit Professionals (CCP). Its training builds in artificial intelligence and digital skills. First examinations under the KASNEB new syllabus run in April 2027. This guide explains every confirmed change, what stays the same, and what students should do now.

The overhaul matters well beyond Kenya. Similarly, syllabus redesigns are moving in the same direction worldwide, as the ACCA 2027 redesign shows, and candidates weighing routes often compare bodies side by side, as in our CPA vs CFA vs ACCA comparison. As a result, KASNEB now joins that list, and it has moved early.

KASNEB New Syllabus: What Changed and When It Starts

The KASNEB new syllabus revises CPA, CS, CIFA and CCP around artificial intelligence, digital accounting and workplace competence. It launched on 29 October 2026 in Nairobi, first exams run in April 2027, and the board is finalizing detailed transition guidance for current students.

KASNEB unveiled the revised syllabuses on Thursday 29 October 2026 in Nairobi. The setting was the gala dinner of the second KASNEB International Conference for Professionals (KICP). Secretary and Chief Executive Officer Prof. Nicholas Letting’ and Board Chairperson Dr. Percy Opio led the launch. The revision is the product of the five-year review cycle KASNEB runs for all of its syllabuses. That last major review landed in 2021, with a minor update in 2024, and the current cycle opened in April 2025 with a public call for stakeholder views, benchmarking work and regional stakeholder workshops held across Kenya in September 2026.

Three facts frame everything else in this guide. First, the revision covers four of the six KASNEB professional qualifications: CPA, CS, CIFA and CCP. The remaining two professional qualifications, CISSE and CQP, were not part of the launch list, by contrast. Second, KASNEB benchmarked the content against professional qualifications and training frameworks in more than 25 countries. The list includes Singapore, Malaysia, the United States, Canada and Australia. Third, the examination calendar does not move: KASNEB holds sittings in April, August and December each year, so the December 2026 sitting still runs on the current syllabus and the April 2027 sitting opens the new era.

What AI Content the KASNEB New Syllabus Adds

Above all, the headline change is integration, not a single new paper. KASNEB has woven emerging technology content through the revised syllabuses, led by artificial intelligence, digital accounting and electronic records management. The logic is straightforward. After all, employers no longer hire accountants, analysts, company secretaries and credit professionals to push paper through manual systems. Prof. Letting’ put the goal plainly at the launch: the board wants accountants to move from manual processes to digital systems and to use technology to prepare financial statements more efficiently.

In addition, four supporting changes sit around that core:

  • Stronger forensic and ethics content. The revision strengthens training in forensic fraud examination, corporate governance and professional ethics, three areas employers flagged as gaps.
  • Competency-based training. The syllabuses now embed occupational standards, so candidates must demonstrate workplace competence and practical judgment, not only theoretical knowledge tested in an examination hall.
  • Micro-credentials. The review introduces micro-credentials, short specialized awards that let professionals build targeted skills and improve their marketability between or after the main qualifications.
  • Digital examination integrity. KASNEB is strengthening examination security through biometric identification of candidates and digital examination monitoring, aimed at impersonation and malpractice.

Meanwhile, the integrity work is not starting from zero. KASNEB published a notice on biometric registration of students in February 2026, months before the syllabus launch, so registered students should expect identity checks to be a normal part of the examination process by the time the first revised papers are sat.

Overall, the scale explains why the board treated this as a national project rather than a routine refresh. KASNEB examines roughly 30,000 candidates in each sitting and has produced more than 60,000 qualified professionals to date, with a target of 20,000 more over the next five years.

KASNEB New Syllabus Changes by Qualification

KASNEB announced the change themes at board level, and detailed paper-by-paper syllabus documents will follow on the KASNEB website. The table maps the confirmed themes to each qualification, alongside the structure students know today.

QualificationWho it qualifiesStructure todayMain change themes
CPA (Certified Public Accountants)Accountants, auditors, finance managers, tax managers and consultants in public and private sectors3 levels, 18 papers, plus ethics and work simulation workshopsArtificial intelligence and digital accounting across reporting, audit and tax work, building on the existing Business Data Analytics practical paper
CS (Certified Secretaries)Company secretaries, governance professionals, compliance auditors and policy advisers3 levels, 16 papers, plus a research project or research workshopElectronic records management, governance technology and a heavier corporate governance and compliance load
CIFA (Certified Investment and Financial Analysts)Investment and securities analysts, portfolio managers, fund managers and investment bankers3 levels, 16 papers, plus a computer-based Financial Modelling and Data Analytics practical paperArtificial intelligence and data analytics in investment analysis, portfolio work and financial modelling
CCP (Certified Credit Professionals)Credit analysts, debt managers, corporate lending officers and collections specialists3 levels, 14 papers, examined mainly on a computer-based platformData-driven credit assessment, digital collections and stronger credit governance and risk content

In fact, two patterns cut across all four rows. Every qualification keeps its Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced level ladder, and every qualification picks up the same competency-based design, so the shape of study stays familiar while the content of study changes. Likewise, candidates coming from other global bodies will recognize the direction of travel: the ACCA qualification guide on this site describes a body mid-redesign for the same reasons.

CPA Kenya Papers Under the KASNEB New Syllabus Era

CPA is the flagship KASNEB qualification, and most readers of this guide are tracking it. Therefore, its current architecture is worth setting out in full. The minimum entry requirement for KASNEB professional qualifications is a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade of C+ (plus). Professional courses run at Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced levels, and each level takes an average of one year. In practice, a CPA student books a minimum of three papers in a level in any sitting.

Foundation Level (6 papers): Financial Accounting; Communication Skills; Introduction to Law and Governance; Economics; Quantitative Analysis; Information Communication Technology.

Intermediate Level (6 papers): Company Law; Financial Management; Financial Reporting and Analysis; Auditing and Assurance; Management Accounting; Public Finance and Taxation.

Advanced Level opens with Leadership and Management. Its compulsory papers are Advanced Financial Reporting and Analysis, Advanced Financial Management and Advanced Management Accounting. Each candidate also picks one specialization paper: Advanced Taxation, Advanced Auditing and Assurance or Advanced Public Financial Management, and double specialization is allowed. The level closes with the Business Data Analytics practical paper, a Workshop on Ethics, and a Workshop on Work Simulation for candidates without one year of relevant practical experience.

The Other Three Qualifications

The other three revised qualifications follow the same ladder. CS runs 16 papers across its three levels and closes with a research project or research workshop at Advanced Level. CIFA runs 16 papers and already examines Financial Modelling and Data Analytics as a computer-based practical paper at Advanced Level, the clearest sign of where its content is heading. Finally, CCP is the leanest of the four at 14 papers, with credit risk, collections and debt recovery weighted toward the Advanced Level, and it is administered primarily on a computer-based platform.

Examination format also matters for planning. KASNEB examinations are held in English three times a year, in April, August and December, and the board advises at least six months of continuous learning before a sitting. The board also announced a format change for professional examinations from the April 2026 sitting. Each professional paper now consists of five compulsory questions to be answered in three hours, with no optional questions. Until KASNEB publishes the revised paper lists, treat the structure above as the baseline the new syllabus revises. In short, it is not the final shape of the April 2027 papers.

Transition Rules for the KASNEB New Syllabus

However, the honest headline is that KASNEB is still finalizing the detailed transition arrangements. At the launch, the board confirmed that it is preparing guidance for candidates already studying under the current curriculum, with the stated aim that continuing students are not disadvantaged. Earlier, a consultation document had pointed to a December 2026 start for first examinations under the revised syllabuses; the launch moved that first sitting to April 2027, which gives current students one extra sitting of breathing room.

So what can students rely on today, from KASNEB published rules:

  • Passed papers are safe. KASNEB rules state that the board retains credits for papers passed by candidates without limit, so a paper passed under the current syllabus does not expire when the syllabus changes.
  • Candidates must complete levels in order. A candidate may not enter a higher level before completing the lower level, except where the board approves otherwise for a specific examination.
  • Registration must stay current. Registered students renew their studentship once every financial year; a lapsed registration is a self-inflicted problem no transition rule will fix.
  • Exemptions follow published schedules. KASNEB grants exemptions for prior qualifications under published exemption schedules, and an exempted paper cannot be booked or sat without the written authority of the Chief Executive. Check your exemption position early, because it decides which papers a transition can actually move.
  • December 2026 is a current-syllabus sitting. Because KASNEB scheduled the first revised-syllabus examinations for April 2027, candidates sitting in December 2026 should prepare with current materials and current past papers.

The Practical Playbook

The practical playbook follows from those rules. If you are mid-level, finish the level under the syllabus you started, because completed levels and banked credits travel with you. When you are choosing between a December 2026 attempt and waiting for April 2027, sit in December for any paper you are ready for. KASNEB retains a pass without limit. Similarly, if you plan to start in 2027, buy materials written for the revised syllabus and confirm your training institution is accredited by KASNEB. And whatever your stage, read the transition notice itself when KASNEB publishes it. Paper mapping between old and new syllabuses is exactly the kind of detail that decides exemptions.

Exam Traps and Common Mistakes

  • Expecting one new AI paper. KASNEB integrated the AI content across subjects rather than parking it in a single technology paper. Consequently, revision plans that isolate it will miss marks spread through reporting, audit, analysis and governance papers.
  • Studying old materials for a new-syllabus sitting. From April 2027, past papers from the current syllabus test content that may have moved, shrunk or disappeared. Match your materials to your sitting date, not to the date you registered.
  • Confusing CPA Kenya with other CPAs. KASNEB CPA is the Kenyan qualification administered from Nairobi. In other words, it is not the US CPA and not CPA Australia, and employers and exemption policies treat them differently.
  • Ignoring the ethics and governance upgrade. The revision deliberately strengthens forensic fraud examination, corporate governance and professional ethics. Candidates who treat those papers as soft options are walking into the part of the syllabus the board cares about most.
  • Letting registration lapse while waiting for news. Transition guidance protects students in the system. Keep your studentship renewed and your booked papers moving.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do the first KASNEB new syllabus examinations run?

KASNEB has scheduled the first examinations under the revised syllabuses for the April 2027 sitting. At the same time, the December 2026 sitting still runs on the current syllabus, and the regular April, August and December examination calendar continues unchanged.

Which qualifications does the KASNEB new syllabus cover?

KASNEB revised and launched four professional qualifications together: CPA, CS, CIFA and CCP. The board offers six professional qualifications in total; CISSE and CQP were not named in the launch, and certificate and diploma courses sit outside this revision instead.

I have already passed some papers. Do they still count?

Yes. KASNEB published rules state that the board retains credits for papers passed by candidates without limit. The board is still finalizing the detailed mapping guidance for students mid-qualification. It has said continuing candidates will not be disadvantaged by the change.

What should I do if I am starting CPA Kenya in 2027?

Plan for the revised syllabus from day one. Register with KASNEB, choose an accredited training institution, and use materials written for the new syllabus rather than discounted old-syllabus stock. Importantly, the entry requirement has not changed: the published minimum remains a KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus).

Is the AI content a separate new subject?

No. KASNEB integrated artificial intelligence and related technology content, including digital accounting and electronic records management, across the revised syllabuses. Existing practical papers such as Business Data Analytics in CPA and Financial Modelling and Data Analytics in CIFA show the direction, but the technology thread now runs through the whole qualification.
