Microsoft rewrote the English AB-730 exam outline on October 20, 2026, and if you studied from older material, your practice is now aimed at the wrong target. The standalone group on creating and managing Microsoft 365 Copilot agents is gone. In its place is a new domain, Drive business outcomes by using agents, worth 20 to 25 percent of the exam. Practice selecting prebuilt agents and using Copilot Cowork for multi-step work, not building agents from scratch.
This AB-730 October 2026 update explains what changed, what to stop drilling, and how to audit your prep in 30 minutes. For the full guide, start with our Microsoft AB-730 exam guide, then use this post as the change notice on top of it. Plan the remaining practice with the free study timetable generator.
What Changed in the AB-730 October 2026 Update
Microsoft rewrote the English AB-730 outline on October 20, 2026. It removed the standalone group on creating and managing agents and added a new domain, Drive business outcomes by using agents, worth 20 to 25 percent. Practice prebuilt agents and Copilot Cowork, not agent building.
The change is in the official Microsoft Learn study guide, in the section headed Skills measured as of October 20, 2026, and in its change log. That change log is the safest way to read the update, because it compares the old and new outlines side by side instead of asking you to guess what moved.
| What changed | Before October 20, 2026 | As of October 20, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Agents group | Create and manage Microsoft 365 Copilot agents | Removed as a standalone group |
| New domain | No separate agents domain | Drive business outcomes by using agents, 20 to 25 percent |
| Prompts domain | Manage prompts and conversations by using AI | Manage prompts and chats by using Microsoft 365 Copilot, 20 to 25 percent, with major changes to the prompt and chat objectives |
| Content domain | Draft and analyze business content by using AI | Manage business content and collaboration by using Microsoft 365 Copilot, 20 to 25 percent, with major changes to meetings and collaboration |
| Fundamentals domain | Understand generative AI fundamentals | Same domain, 25 to 30 percent; change log marks its share as decreased |
Two points in that table matter for study time. First, the change log marks the three older domains as decreased in share as the new agents domain took its share. Second, Microsoft does not publish the old weights in that change log, so any source quoting exact old percentages is guessing. Work from the current weights only: fundamentals at 25 to 30 percent, and the other three domains at 20 to 25 percent each.
The New AB-730 Agents Domain, Explained
The new domain has two parts, and both test judgment and use, not construction.
Select and apply prebuilt agents
Select and apply prebuilt Microsoft 365 Copilot agents. You need to spot a workflow where a prebuilt agent helps, choose between a prebuilt agent and a custom agent for a task, apply an agent to a business process inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, and filter chats by agents. Notice the wording: choosing between prebuilt and custom is tested, but the old objectives on creating an agent, configuring its knowledge, settings, instructions, and suggested prompts, and sharing it, are no longer a separate group. Do not spend a week learning agent configuration screens and expect that time to convert directly into marks.
Perform business tasks with Copilot Cowork
Perform business tasks by using Microsoft Copilot Cowork. Cowork is the multi-step worker in the new outline. The objectives cover three habits. First, describe how Cowork carries out multi-step business tasks and how it uses skills to complete parts of a task. Second, know its security considerations and known limitations, and choose between prebuilt skills and custom skills. Third, delegate a piece of work to Cowork and a prebuilt skill, review its plan, progress, and results, and manage scheduled tasks or prompts. That last pair, delegate then review, is the habit the exam rewards. A candidate who hands Cowork a task and accepts the output unchecked has missed the point of the domain.
Work IQ runs through the rest of the outline as well. The audience profile now says candidates take advantage of AI and Work IQ to improve daily work and drive business outcomes, without building apps or writing code. In the content domain, that means generating or analyzing content based on business context, including Work IQ and connectors, and deriving insights across Work IQ. In the fundamentals domain, it means understanding how context, including Work IQ, web data, or the app in use, can affect Copilot responses.
What to Stop Studying, and What to Start Practicing
| Stop drilling as a separate skill | Start practicing instead |
|---|---|
| Building an agent from a template, step by step | Picking the right prebuilt agent for a named workflow, and saying why it fits |
| Configuring agent knowledge, instructions, and settings in detail | Applying a prebuilt agent inside Copilot, Word, Excel, or Teams, and checking its output |
| Agent sharing and management checklists from old notes | Delegating one multi-step task to Cowork, reviewing its plan before it runs, then reviewing its results |
| Prompt theory with no saved or scheduled prompts | Saving, scheduling, sharing, and refining prompts, including model selection, and organizing chats in Notebooks |
None of this means agents disappeared from the exam. They moved from a build skill to a use skill, and that move is worth roughly a quarter of the exam. A practice set that still spends most of its agent questions on configuration is now teaching the old exam, even if every answer in it is technically correct about the product.
How to Audit Your AB-730 Prep Material in 30 Minutes
Run this check on any course, question bank, or set of notes before you trust it for a sitting after October 20, 2026.
- Search the material for a full agents domain at 20 to 25 percent, with prebuilt agents and Copilot Cowork named. If Cowork is missing, the material predates the update.
- Search for creating and managing agents as a headline topic. If it is still presented as a core skill to master, treat that section as outdated and skip it.
- Check the prompts section for model selection, prompt memory and instructions, and Notebooks. The current outline names all three.
- Check the meetings section for the Facilitator agent, real-time catch-up, Intelligent recap, and Copilot Pages. Those are the current collaboration objectives.
- Open the official study guide on Microsoft Learn and compare its four domain headings with your material. If the headings do not match, follow the official guide, not the course.
If your material fails the first two checks, do not throw it away. The fundamentals, prompt craft, and content work in it still apply. Cut the agent-building chapters, add a week of prebuilt agent and Cowork practice, and re-balance your time toward the current weights.
AB-730 Exam Facts That Did Not Change
According to Microsoft Learn, the AB-730 exam still tests practical Copilot use for business professionals, with no coding and no app building. The passing score is 700 or greater. The United States list price is $99, with the price set by the country or region where the exam is proctored, so confirm the fee at booking. Most questions cover features that are generally available, although the guide notes the exam may contain questions on preview features if those features are commonly used.
Exams in other languages are updated about eight weeks after the English version, so if you plan to sit in a language other than English, check which outline version applies to your sitting date on Microsoft Learn.
That language timing point is easy to miss. The October 20, 2026 date in the study guide is the English outline date. A translated exam may still run the older outline for a short period after that date, and the guide itself warns about the lag. Do not assume your sitting uses the new outline until you have checked the version for your language and date.

AB-730 October 2026 Update FAQs
Does AB-730 still require building agents?
No, not as a standalone skill. Microsoft removed the create and manage agents group in the October 20, 2026 outline. The new domain tests selecting and applying prebuilt agents and using Cowork. Choosing between a prebuilt agent and a custom agent for a task is still an objective, but building and configuring an agent is no longer the skill being measured.
I already booked AB-730. Does this update affect me?
Check the outline version for your sitting date and language on Microsoft Learn before you change your plan. The English outline changed on October 20, 2026, and translated exams follow about eight weeks later. If your sitting uses the new outline, shift your remaining practice to prebuilt agents and Cowork using the audit steps above.
Is my old AB-730 study material useless now?
No. Fundamentals, prompt craft, responsible AI, and business content work still carry 65 to 80 percent of the exam combined, based on the current domain weights. Only the agent-building material is outdated as a headline skill. Keep the rest, cut the building chapters, and add prebuilt agent and Cowork practice.
Where can I check the official outline?
On Microsoft Learn, in the study guide for exam AB-730, under Skills measured as of October 20, 2026, including the change log at the end of the guide. That page is the source for every domain weight and change in this update.
