Google Cloud Agentic Architect: Exam Guide [2026]

Google Cloud Agentic Architect certification guide: the 5 exam domains with weights (13% low-code tools, 17% coding agents, 33% custom agents, 22% evaluate and deploy, 15% secure and govern)

What Is the Google Cloud Agentic Architect Certification?

The Google Cloud Agentic Architect certification is Google’s newest credential for developers who design and manage autonomous AI-driven agent workflows. It has two parts: a proctored multiple-choice exam, then hands-on labs in Google Skills that unlock after you pass. General availability is expected mid-November 2026 at $200 USD.

In other words, this is not another memorization exam. Google built this certification around a simple idea: anyone can answer questions about agents, but far fewer people can build one that survives contact with production. That is why the hands-on labs are mandatory. You do not get certified by passing the exam alone. Instead, you pass the exam, then prove you can build in a live Google Cloud environment, and only then does Google call you a Professional Agentic Architect.

The timing also matters: the beta window ran September 8 to 30, 2026, and general availability is expected mid-November 2026. As a result, this is a genuine first-mover window: the exam guide is public, the official learning path exists, and very few study resources compete for attention yet. If you start now, you can be certified in the first wave.

Google Cloud Agentic Architect Exam Facts

Lock in the facts first, because several of them are unusual for a Google Cloud certification:

DetailWhat Google Says
StatusBeta closed September 30, 2026; general availability expected mid-November 2026
FormatTwo parts: proctored multiple-choice exam (multiple choice + multiple select), then hands-on labs in Google Skills that unlock only after you pass
LengthAbout 2 hours at GA (the beta ran 3 hours with ~80 questions)
Fee$200 USD at GA, plus tax where applicable; vouchers accepted (beta was $120)
DeliveryOnline-proctored or at a test center via Pearson
LanguageEnglish
Results7 to 10 business days at GA
Validity1 year, unusually short; every other Google Cloud professional certification lasts 2 years
PrerequisitesNone
Recommended experience3+ years building, testing, deploying, and managing cloud solutions, including 1+ year building agentic solutions on Google Cloud
Passing scoreGoogle does not publish one

Two details, in particular, deserve emphasis. First, the 1-year validity is half the normal Google Cloud professional cycle, which tells you how fast Google expects agentic tooling to move. Plan to recertify or keep building. Second, beta attempts did not count toward your allowable exam attempts, so early adopters got a free swing.

The 5 Exam Sections of the Google Cloud Agentic Architect Exam

The exam guide splits the content into five sections with published weights. In fact, sections 3 and 4 together make up 55% of the exam: custom agent development plus evaluation and deployment is where this certification is won or lost.

SectionWeightCore Topics
1. Building agents using low-code tools~13%Gemini Enterprise Agent Designer, CX Agent Studio
2. Using coding agents for application development~17%MCP servers, Antigravity, secure sandboxes on GKE and Cloud Workstations
3. Developing custom agents~33%Agent Development Kit (ADK), model selection, sessions and memory, RAG with vector retrieval, multi-agent orchestration via MCP and A2A
4. Evaluating and deploying agentic workflows~22%Golden datasets, evaluation pipelines, runtime selection, troubleshooting drift and reasoning loops
5. Securing and governing agentic workflows~15%OAuth 2.0 tool calls, Model Armor, Agent Gateway, human-in-the-loop guardrails

Section 1: Building Agents Using Low-Code Tools (~13%)

This is the smallest section, and the most approachable. Google wants architects who can choose the right build path, which sometimes means not writing code. Know when a low-code tool like Gemini Enterprise Agent Designer or CX Agent Studio fits the problem, and just as importantly, know when it does not. For example, expect scenario questions that test build-vs-buy judgment rather than product trivia.

Section 2: Using Coding Agents for Application Development (~17%)

This section covers the developer workflow around agents: MCP servers that give agents tools, Antigravity for agentic coding, and running agents in secure sandboxes on GKE or Cloud Workstations. Overall, the theme is safe, productive agent-assisted development. Study how sandboxing isolates agent actions and why that matters before an agent touches production systems.

Section 3: Developing Custom Agents (~33%)

The heavyweight section, and the one that decides most outcomes. At its center sits the Agent Development Kit (ADK): learn its core building blocks cold. Beyond the kit, the exam tests the judgment calls of real agent engineering. How do you pick a model for a task? What role do sessions and memory play across turns? Can you ground an agent with RAG and vector retrieval so it stops hallucinating? And finally, how do multiple agents coordinate through MCP and the A2A protocol? Therefore, spend roughly a third of your study time here, because the exam does.

Section 4: Evaluating and Deploying Agentic Workflows (~22%)

Building the agent is half the job; proving it works is the other half. This section covers golden datasets (curated input-output pairs you judge against), evaluation pipelines, choosing the right runtime, and debugging the two classic agent failure modes: drift, where behavior degrades over long runs, and reasoning loops, where the agent spins without progressing. If you have MLOps experience, much of this will feel familiar. However, the agent-specific failure modes are new and heavily tested.

Section 5: Securing and Governing Agentic Workflows (~15%)

Agents that call tools with your credentials are a security boundary, and this section treats them that way. Know how OAuth 2.0 scopes tool calls, what Model Armor protects against, how Agent Gateway controls traffic, and where human-in-the-loop guardrails belong. As a result, the questions here reward thinking like an attacker: what could a compromised or confused agent do with the permissions you gave it?

The Google Cloud Agentic Architect Hands-On Labs: What to Expect

Here is the part that separates this certification from every other Google Cloud exam. After you pass the proctored exam, Google Skills unlocks the Professional Agentic Architect hands-on labs. You get a live Google Cloud environment and under 5 hours to complete them, with 2 months to finish once they become available. In short: no labs, no certification.

What the Labs Test

Google describes the labs as validating your execution and coding ability. In practice, that means building and debugging agents under time pressure: wiring tools via MCP, implementing RAG retrieval, setting up guardrails, and getting a multi-agent workflow running. The exam guide’s topics are your best preview of the lab tasks, since both assess the same abilities.

How to Prepare for the Labs

Reading about ADK will not save you in a live environment. Before exam day, build at least two complete agents end to end in a Google Cloud project: one single-agent RAG workflow and one multi-agent orchestration. Time yourself. By contrast, the candidates who struggle in labs are the ones whose preparation was all theory. Google’s own Skills learning path for this certification includes hands-on labs and skill badges, and its 12 activities were published on October 13, 2026, with an update planned for general availability in November, according to the Google Skills path page. Work through it before you sit the exam.

Your 4-Week Google Cloud Agentic Architect Study Plan

This plan assumes the recommended background (cloud experience plus some agentic work). However, if you are newer to agents, stretch it to 6 weeks rather than cramming: the hands-on labs will expose shallow preparation immediately.

Week 1: Foundations and Low-Code

Read the official exam guide end to end and map every topic to a section weight. Build one agent in a low-code tool (Agent Designer or CX Agent Studio) to internalize section 1. Next, start the Google Skills learning path. Set up a Google Cloud project with billing alerts; new customers get $300 in free credits on signup, which covers practice costs.

Week 2: Custom Agents (ADK Deep Dive)

The biggest week. Work through ADK documentation and build a custom agent with session memory and a vector-retrieval RAG pipeline. Then extend it: add a second agent and coordinate the two via MCP or A2A. This single exercise covers the core of section 3, worth a third of the exam. Document every design decision; the exam tests judgment, not just syntax.

Week 3: Evaluation, Deployment, and Security

Build a golden dataset for your week 2 agent (20 to 30 input-output pairs) and run an evaluation pipeline against it. Practice diagnosing drift and reasoning loops by breaking your agent on purpose and fixing it. Then lock down security: scope tool calls with OAuth 2.0, add Model Armor, and place human-in-the-loop guardrails on actions you cannot undo. Sections 4 and 5 together are 37% of the exam.

Week 4: Labs Simulation and Review

Finally, stop learning new material. Do two timed lab simulations: build a complete agent workflow from scratch in under 2.5 hours each. Review every section-3 and section-4 topic you hesitated on. Re-read the exam guide’s topic list and confirm you can explain each item without notes. Book the exam for the end of the week, while the hands-on work is fresh.

Who Should Take the Google Cloud Agentic Architect Certification

Google lists no formal prerequisites, but read the recommended experience as the real requirement: 3+ years building cloud solutions and 1+ year building agentic solutions on Google Cloud. This certification fits cloud developers, architects, and ML engineers who already ship on GCP and want the credential that matches the work they do.

Who should wait? If you have never built an agent beyond prompting a chatbot, this is not your starting point. Instead, build the foundations first: the Google AI Professional Certificate or equivalent hands-on practice, then return when you have real agent projects behind you. The labs do not grade intentions; they grade working systems.

Finally, one more consideration: the 1-year validity. Most Google Cloud professional certs last 2 years. At 1 year, this certification suits people actively working in agentic AI who will naturally stay current, not collectors adding a badge to a profile.
